Three top destinations for chocolate lovers

December is a time of indulgence. And what better way to get your fix than by taking a chocolate-fuelled trip around the globe. Marissa Cooke gives us three destinations for you and the sweet tooth in your life. And the best part is, after you've indulged you can get out on foot and walk it off with a tour around each of these fascinating places.

If the thought of chocolate for breakfast makes you weak at the knees, you should definitely add Spain to your travel wish list. Hot chocolate with churros (Spain’s answer to the doughnut) is a breakfast staple. Chocolaterias in Spain are about as Spanish as flamenco, Picasso and raging bulls.

Ultimate chocolate indulgence:
Treat yourself to a chocolate massage at Gran Hotel Balneario Blancafort Thermal Centre, La Garriga (just outside of Barcelona)

Oaxaca, Mexico:

This is where it all began -the bustling birth place of cocoa. Oaxaca is is still synonymous with chocolate, and every street is overflowing with chocolate in some shape or form – chocolate pastry, chocolate bars, steaming hot chocolate, and Oaxaca’s famous chocolate sauce (molè). Most Oaxaca chocolate is produced from closely guarded family recipes and mixed in the traditional style by hand.

Best Chocolate Stops:
Mina 20 Noviembre Streets where the producers of the world famous chocolates of Moyordomo, Guelaguetza and La Soledad are based. Sip a hot chocolate blend made especially for you!

Cocoa-tourism doesn’t get any better than in Belgium - the undisputed chocolate capital of the world. With some 16 chocolate museums, a dozen factories devoted to chocolate making and more than 2000 chocolate shops, it goes without saying that Belgium is a must for any sweet tooth.

Don’t miss:
Brussel’s answer to Willly Wonka’s chocolate factory. Visit The Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate for the complete history of chocolate and chocolate making, chocolate sculptures and yes, even chocolate clothing!
