Journey into the misty hill tribe-filled hills of northern Vietnam

Travel to Sapa and uncover the jewels of Vietnam's verdant northwest. A visit to Hanoi's Ethnology Museum gives a taste of what's to come: a multitude of minority cultures and quaint villages hidden in the distant green hills and valleys. Take the plush Victoria Express to Lao Cai, your stepping stone to some spectacular trekking trails. Be invited into the home of local villagers, and stay at a dramatically located ecolodge deep in the misty mountains of Hoang Lien National Park. With a new surprise and photographic opportunity seemingly around every turn, this is Vietnam at its picturesque best.

Why we love this trip

  • Bookended by Hanoi, this journey offers more than a glimpse of Vietnam's wondrous capital. Visit the Ethnology Museum and try your hand at traditional calligraphy with a local master

  • Travel overnight on the exclusive Victoria Express, whose excellent facilities and plush wood-panelled interior make it the most luxurious train on the Hanoi–Lao Cai route

  • Embark on several of Sapa's scenic treks. With idyllic green landscapes, ethnic hilltribe villages and hidden waterfalls, this is a slice of Vietnam to remember

  • Enjoy an excellent variety of accommodation. A Lao Chai village homestay gives you a taste of Batik painting, and the Topas Ecolodge offers incredible views across the mountainous Hoang Lien National Park

  • Finish with a superb dining experience at KOTO, a Hanoi institution dedicated to training disadvantaged youth in hospitality

Is this trip right for you?

  • If you're passionate about walking, this trip is for you. There are two days of trekking, and several other shorter walks, spanning some incredible scenery.

  • This itinerary has two homestay nights with dormitory style accommodation and basic shared facilities. It's a great chance to get to know the locals though – and enjoy small-village hospitality and a home-cooked meal.

  • The walking is not overly strenuous, but the terrain can be quite steep and unpredictable, with uneven and slippery surfaces. It's important to bring sturdy walking shoes.

  • Winter (November–February) can get cold, wet and foggy. Even outside of winter, Sapa is know for having four seasons in one day. It's best to pack layers and be prepared for varied conditions throughout the day (and for cooler nights).

There will be an important welcome meeting in the evening (usually at 6pm). Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask the hotel reception where it will take place. If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details to provide to your leader.
