Uncover some of Africa's wildlife highlights on this journey through Kenya and Tanzania. There's a lot of wilderness to cover in two weeks, but still plenty of time to relax, take it all in and realise you're on your dream African safari!

TRIP CHANGES FOR 2017:
From 1st January 2017 this trip will decrease by 2 days to become a 13 day itinerary. As a result we will now spend 1 night at Lake Nakuru NP and not visit Thomson Falls or Menengai Crater. The Lake Nakuru full day game drive will be replaced with a half day game drive on day 4 and the night at Tarangire NP has been removed. This itinerary will now include a flight between Nairobi and Arusha to allow for a more comfortable transit. This change comes as a result of traveller feedback and allows the itinerary to focus on the real highlights of Kenya and Tanzania. Please see trip code PFKTC for the 2017 itinerary, dates and prices.

  • Stay in beautifully located accommodation, from the spectacular hill-perched lodge overlooking Lake Manyara in east Africa's Great Rift Valley, to 'The Ark', a unique tree lodge surveying a floodlit waterhole.

  • Taking in five national parks as well as Ngorongoro Crater, this is the ultimate wildlife expedition – from lions prowling the famous Masai Mara to millions of wildebeest on wide-open plains, you’ll be surrounded by quintessential Africa.

  • End each day falling asleep in your comfortable tented camp or lodge to the thrilling sounds of nature.

Is this trip right for you?

  • This itinerary features some long travel days, which can be exacerbated by bumpy African roads. It is recommended that you pay close attention to our given approximations of driving hours.

  • There will be some early morning game drives where the temperature can get quite cool. So it's best to pack suitable clothing for all weather conditions.

Some more common sightings are the lion, leopard, elephant, baboon, colobus monkey and a wide array of birds of prey. You will arrive in time for lunch at the Aberdare Country Club. This delightful property is situated on a 1,300 acre wildlife sanctuary. After lunch, the afternoon is yours. Enjoy the Country Club's facilities and surroundings, or set off on a nature walk through unspoiled terrain. On this walk you'll have the opportunity to get up close to some zebra or giraffes that have wandered into the beautiful surroundings. The Aberdare Range is just south of the equator and forms part of the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley, a land brimming with abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery. The area is also famous for being the headquarters of Dedan Kimathi, leader of the 1950s Mau Mau uprising.

The Ark's several balconies and lounges provide superb vantage points for game viewing. A ground level bunker affords excellent photographic opportunities and takes you closer than you might believe possible to the animals. When night falls, watch with excitement as creatures flock in large numbers to the watering hole. Your resident guide can alert you of must-see animal sightings via a buzzer linked to your room.

En route you will stop for lunch at Thomson's Falls Lodge, named after the waterfalls discovered in 1883 by Scottish geologist and naturalist Joseph Thomson. In the afternoon there is the opportunity to visit the Menengai Crater, one of the largest craters on earth – a great chance to witness breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley. Your accommodation for the next two nights is a traditional lodge, superbly located on the edge of a pond among the trees and birds.

In 2015 we reviewed our position on visitations to children’s residential homes and shelters (orphanages). After much consultation with our local and global staff, child protection agencies and some of our on-ground projects, we have decided to stop visiting childrens shelters in 2016 and beyond. We understand that there is a risk that our visitations to these homes could be too disruptive for the children, resulting in unintended, negative outcomes. It is for this reason that we no longer visa East Africa Mission Orphanage associated with Ziwa Bush Lodge.

We recognise the fantastic work that our on-ground projects, that include childrens homes, do to support families and to address genuine homelessness, abuse and neglect of children. We will therefore continue our support through the Intrepid Foundation. If you would like to contribute to these projects, please visit the The Intrepid Foundation website.

A short drive takes you to Lake Nakuru National Park, the centrepiece of which is the lake itself. Watch the abundant flamingos frolic in this soda lake, one of many in the area. Sometimes there are up to two million of these birds in this particular spot – one of the world's greatest ornithological spectacles. The lake itself can often turn a vivid pink. Look out for the waterbuck, reedbuck and gazelle that also inhabit the area. If you're lucky, you might spot one of the area's fearsome beauties, the leopard. Less common are the highly endangered black rhinoceros, though you will have a good chance of seeing a white rhino. After a day in the park, return to your private lodge to retire for the evening.

Head southwest to your next destination, the Masai Mara (approximately 6–7 hours). Here lies arguably one of the finest game reserves on the continent. Take in vistas of rolling green plains and riverine woodlands, not to mention many species of game. On today's game drive on the way to your tented camp, you could have the good fortune to observe a black-maned lion, leopard or a cheetah. These predators find an abundant food supply in the massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle, all of which roam these verdant grasslands. This is the land of the famed and fated annual migration of wildebeest.

Rise a little before dawn to begin your morning game drive. As the sun rises, you shouldn't have any trouble spotting wildlife, as this is often one of the most active times of day for animals. After what is hopefully an exciting morning's drive, you will return to camp for lunch and to relax during the heat of the day. Set off again in the afternoon – this time you can expect to return to camp at around sunset. Depending on wildlife movements, you may not return to camp in the middle of the day, making for one full game drive instead (in this case you will stop for a picnic lunch). Accommodation while in 'The Mara' is a comfortable permanent-tented camp. Once we return to the tented camp there is an option to go back out and visit a Maasai Village. These visits can be fascinating to learn about the different culture and way of life of traditional Maasai people. However, please note that these villages exist primarily as businesses. You will be charged an entry fee of USD20-25 and they will try very hard to sell souvenirs to you. An optional balloon ride over the Masai Mara at sunrise is highly recommended, an unforgettable experience for many travellers.

Notes: If you have pre-booked a hot air balloon ride, you will be picked up and driven to the launch site, receive a safety briefing from your pilot and help inflate the balloon. You'll glide through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, enjoying amazing photo opportunities. Upon landing you'll be treated to a bush breakfast before returning to your vehicle. This is a popular activity with limited places, so on this trip it's offered as a pre-booked activity, which guarantees you a place. If you choose to wait and book this activity locally on the ground you may risk missing out on a place.

Head off early this morning for a game walk into a private concession area adjoining the Masai Mara National Reserve. After breakfast, drive back to Nairobi (approximately 6 hours), arriving in the late afternoon, with the evening at your leisure.

Notes: To reduce your travelling time back to Nairobi, you may wish to consider a flight from Masai Mara to Nairobi at an additional cost. This will give you the chance to spend some extra time in Nairobi, where you can do some sightseeing or relax around the hotel pool. Note that the flight from Masai Mara arrives at Wilson Airport (Nairobi) and you’ll require a transfer to our Nairobi hotel. We are able to book the flight, plus the transfer to our Nairobi hotel, at additional cost.

A two-hour drive then takes you through the village of Mto Wa Mbu before climbing up part of the Great Rift Valley to the lodge, arriving at the Lake Manyara Serena Lodge in the late afternoon. Keep an eye out for the red-robed Masai people, wildlife, and spectacular views of Mt Meru as you leave Arusha and head towards Lake Manyara. Tonight's lodge is spectacularly perched high on the escarpment overlooking the alkaline Lake Manyara, the perfect place to spend your first night in Tanzania.

The area is also renowned for black-maned tree-climbing lions, who have developed this habit due to the marshy soil. Witnessing one of these is real highlight of any safari. Large herds of buffalo and elephant are also often sighted. Next you will depart Lake Manyara for the wide open plains of the Serengeti. To reach the Serengeti you will travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, skirting the Ngorongoro Crater, before entering the great Serengeti. You will spend the afternoon on a game drive covering the more southern regions of the Serengeti before reaching your lodge.

They are home to massive numbers of grazing animals and various predators, and the interaction between the many species often provides some of the best wildlife viewing in the world. Today you will start around sunrise for a morning game drive, and follow that up later on with an afternoon game drive, as the animals tend to be more active in the cooler hours of the day. You will usually return to camp during the hotter hours in the middle of the day. There you will enjoy a hearty meal, relax and perhaps take a siesta. Depending on wildlife movements and opportunities for sightings, the drive may continue through lunch and last all day. In this case, you will return to the lodge in the late afternoon.

The scenery is spectacular as you descend almost 600 metres down to the crater floor. There is every chance of seeing a considerable variety of wildlife in this compact area, including the highly endangered black rhinoceros. In the afternoon you will leave the crater and return to the farm house for a second night. The late afternoon can be spent relaxing at the house.
