Enjoy unparalleled access to wildlife deep in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest

The rainbow-coloured chaos of the macaws descending on the clay lick at Heath River is an unforgettable scene. The fifth-largest in the world, this clay lick on the Peruvian bank of the river has seen up to 260 birds on it at once.

Why we love this trip

  • Whether on an early morning river cruise, a trek through the jungle at dusk or a night walks in search of nocturnal creatures, the Amazon is remarkable in every light

  • Staying at remote lodges in the middle of the Amazon rainforest provides unequalled access to wildlife

  • Watch as a huge variety of animals gather around naturally-formed clay licks in search of extra nutrients

  • Look for sloths, howler monkeys, black caimans, jaguars and tapirs along rainforest trails

  • Explore the wildlife-rich jungle enclosing Sandoval Lake

Is this trip right for you?

  • The rainforest can be extremely humid during the day and very cold at night. It’s important to pack a range of clothing for all types of weather, including waterproof clothing.

  • Mosquitos are widespread in the Amazon, so please bring tropical-strength insect repellent and clothes to cover your arms and legs. Please see important notes about protection from mosquitoes in the “Health” section of the trip notes.

  • The terrain of the rainforest trails can be unpredictable and boggy. Please bring durable, comfortable footwear and thick hiking socks.

Early in the morning, visit a parrot and macaw clay lick. The colourful birds gather here to eat the clay in the cliffs along the riverbanks, which neutralises the toxins in their diet. Head back down the river and take a walk along the extensive jungle trails, where you'll find huge chestnut, kapok and fig trees. Your guide will explain the medicinal use of dozens of plants and trees and keep an eye out for birds and monkeys. After lunch, hike along a trail to the vast plains of the Pampas del Heath. Return to the lodge when night falls, using headlamps to search for nocturnal creatures in the darkness. Perhaps visit a nearby clay lick after dinner in hope of seeing the largest mammal in the jungle, the Lowland tapir.
